Vietnam equiped Palma naval defense systems for new Gepard-3.9

The vessels can reach a top speed of 26 kt and have a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 10 kt.The Gepard class is expected to replace the four Petya (Project 159)-class light frigates that have been in service for more than 30 years.

The Philippines and Vietnam are also talking to Malaysia about China.

"We are seeing a definite trend here, one that is likely to accelerate," said Rory Medcalf, a regional security specialist at Australia's independent Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney."It is quite a creative dance as countries hedge and try to cover themselves for multiple possible futures."While it was unlikely the new-found relationships would become military alliances, there was an intensity to their strategic discussions, including the sharing of assessments about China's rise and influence, Medcalf said.

Regional diplomats confirmed increasing levels of trust at a working level, as countries find that China's projection of naval power into Asia's waters is driving them together.

Vietnam to receive two more Gepard frigates in 2017



Vietnam's Navy is scheduled to take delivery of its third and fourth Russian-built Gepard 3.9 (Project 11661) light frigates in 2017.Vietnam's Navy commissioned its first two modified Gepard-class frigates, Dinh Tien Hoang and Ly Thai Ho , in March and August 2011 respectively. The two additional vessels, reported to be anti-submarine warfare (ASW) variants, are being built under a contract signed in late 2011.

The class is based on a Russian Navy design, but modified according Vietnamese requirements by the Zelenodolsk Design Bureau. The vessels feature a low-observable superstructure, have an overall length of 102 m, and displace 2,100 tonnes at full load. The vessels can reach a top speed of 26 kt and have a range of 5,000 nautical miles at 10 kt.The light frigates' armaments include one 76 mm AK-176, two 30 mm AK-630, and two AO-18KD guns. The ships can embark a Ka-28 or Ka-31 naval helicopter on deck.

Vietnam Navy's BPS-500 get Russian Missile upgrade

Under contract with JSC Rosoboronexport in 2013, JSC Northern Design Bureau of Russia has started work to support the re-engineering of repair and upgrade missile patrol boats BPS-500 single Navy Vietnam, this information has been confirmed in the 2013 financial statements of the company.

BPS-500 is a small rocket ship  62m long, 11m wide with a full load output of 520 tons, 50 crew. The ship is equipped with the diesel engine speed of 30 knots / h, 30-day journey reserves.

Electronic systems on board Pozitiv ME multimode radar reconnaissance and aerial targets at sea, has a range of over 100km reconnaissance, target detection can fly with area radar reflectivity (RCS) 1m2 fly at 1.000m from the 11km, detecting anti-ship missiles have RCS of 0.03 m2 at a height of 15m, 15km away. Radar can track 15 targets at the same time, sticking 3-5 goals. In addition, the system also ships fire control radar gun and rocket fire and communications systems.

It should be noted that, Severnoe Russian design institute has also recently introduced a new variant of BPS-500 corvette with configurable weapons more powerful than the 381-ship Navy HQ Vietnam. Vietnam Navy's 3rd aircraft DHC-6 is equipped with a special skydive rolling door .The equipment and this door makes it easy for air transport of supplies as well as drop supplies by parachute.This is extremely meaningful to Vietnam's Navy which currently supplies Spratlys islands in slow-speed ships.

All the 3 DHC-6 versions of Vietnam Navy are different, the first DHC-6 is merely a passenger aircraft, second DHC-6 is equipped with radar under the nose to perform specialized tasks like patrol, search and rescue and the third DHC-6 is equipped with shutters for specialized freight transport and para dropping airborne troops.

Arrival of 3 Killers Which Equips Kilo Submarine of Vietnamese Navy

Vietnamese Navy's six Kilo submarines will not be equipped with VA-111 Shkval super torpedo as people have previously speculated . Instead, in 2009, Vietnam has decided to buy two types of Russian anti-submarine torpedoes, anti-ship 53-65 and anti-submarine torpedoes TEST 71.

The information above has been Research Institute Stockholm International Peace (SIPRI) revealed on 17/3.According to SIPRI, the two torpedo  53-65 and TEST 71 will be combined with the type of anti-ship cruise missiles 3M-54 Klub to form a trio of powerful offensive weapon for the diesel-electric submarines of the Vietnamese Navy's Kilo submarines.All three main weapons on this Kilo Vietnam have been ordered since 2009 as part of a deal to buy six Kilo-class submarines, and are expected to be completed in 2016.

SIPRI's report showed that Vietnam has ordered a total of 50 in anti-ship cruise missiles launched from submarines 3M-54 Klub, 80 anti-ship torpedo 53-65 and 80 anti-ship/anti-submarine TEST-71 torpedo.

TEST-71ME-NK propulsion system is equipped with 2 dual propeller, 48km/h cruise speed and increased to 74 km/h in the final stages, 20 km long range attack at a depth of up to 400m.Also 2 torpedo attack on the key, Vietnamese Kilo also will be equipped with cruise missiles, most powerful and now most modern in Russia the 3M-54 Klub. According to the SIPRI Vietnam received 50/80 missiles.

3M-54E missiles has 8.22 m long, 0.53 m diameter, weight 2.300 kg, fitted armor piercing warhead weighs 200 kg explosive fragmentation. Rocket can reach cruising speed of Mach 2.9 (nearly 3 times faster the speed of sound), a range of 200 km.3M-54E probe integrated navigation ARGS-54 active radar target detection is of nearly 60 km. That is the way target range of 60 km, the rocket ammo will automatically detect, catch and target key grip without interference from the launch vehicle.

Russia has launched HQ-185 Khanh Hoa submarine for Vietnam

The first three submarines, includ HQ-182 Hà Nội, HQ-183 TP. Hồ Chí Minh (has been transferred for Vietnam Navy), HQ-184 Hải Phòng testing on the sea.

Vietnam ordered a fleet of six Russian-made submarines in 2009 in a step seen as an effort to counterbalance China’s expanding maritime influence in the region. The contract, which also stipulates the training of Vietnamese submarine crews in Russia, is reportedly worth $2 billion.

The submarines are being built at the Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard in St. Petersburg. All six boats are due for delivery by 2016.The Project 636 class boats displace 3,100 tons, reach speeds of 20 knots, can dive to 300 meters and carry crews of 52 people.

The submarines, which feature 533-milimeter torpedo tubes and are armed with torpedos, mines, and Kalibr 3M54 (NATO SS-N-27 Sizzler) cruise missiles, are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters.

Vietnam Receives 2nd Russia-Made Submarine





A freighter carrying the second Vietnam's kilo-class Russia-made submarine was safely anchored in Vietnam's southern Cam Ranh gulf in Khanh Hoa province, media reported Thursday.The freighter called Rolldock Star arrived in Cam Ranh gulf late Wednesday, after a voyage of nearly two months from Russia's Kaliningrad. This is the second time Rolldock Star has carried out transportation for submarines from Russia to Vietnam, state-run news agency VNA reported.

The submarine, named HQ183-Ho Chi Minh City has the same technical standards as the others in a series of six submarines that Vietnam ordered from Russia.The submarine has an over 3,000-ton displacement, and is able to operate at a maximum depth of 300 meters and at a speed of 20 nautical miles per hour with over 50 crew members. Ho Chi Minh City submarine is said to be equipped with many modern weapons on board, according to VNA.

After arriving at Cam Ranh gulf, Russian and Vietnamese experts will pump water into the cabins of freighter Rolldock Star to release the submarine to the sea. The submarine will then be taken to Cam Ranh Port.Earlier on Dec. 31 last year, Vietnam received the first submarine named HQ182- Hanoi and took it to Cam Ranh port half a month later. Vietnam is expected to receive the third Russia-made submarine in 2014, which will be named HQ184- Hai Phong.

Ukrainian-made 3D radar 36D6-M for S-300 missile system delivered to Vietnamese Army at the port of Saigon

Internet pictures released yesterday shows the delivery of Ukrainian-made 3D search radar ST68UM (36D6-M) in the port of Saigon, Vietnam.

The S-300PMU1 mobile multichannel air defence missile system can defeat modern and future aircrafts, strategic cruise missiles, tactical battlefield ballistic missiles and other targets with a reflection surface up to 0.02 sq. m. flying at speeds up to 2.800 m/s in massive enemy air raids and heavy clutter and severe ECM environments.

Chinese media has reported extensively on the up gradation and modernization of Vietnamese Armed Forces and the political, military, security, and economic relations Vietnam is developing with Russians, Americans, Japanese ,Indians , Australians and the Philippines.






This radar can be used with anti-aircraft missile complexes, as the Russian made S-300 surface-to-air defense missile system.Vietnamese government had ordered two batteries of S-300PMU1 to Russia, including a total of 12 launchers and 72 missiles in 2003 under a bilateral agreement.

The S300PMU1 is an advanced version of the first variant of the S-300 family air defense missile.The S-300PMU1 air defense missile system can simultaneously engage up to 36 air targets by 72 missiles.
The 36D6-M mobile radar system is designed to detect air targets and to perform the friend-or-foe identification. The radar system is able to provide targeting and bearing of active jamming, integrated computer-aided systems of control and guidance of antiaircraft guided missile complexes.

The 36D6-M can detect flying targets to a maximum range of 115 km at flight altitude of 1,000m.In November 2013, Vietnam and Russia signed 17 agreements aimed at boosting political, military and trade ties while increasing cooperation in the energy sector.Russia's exports to Vietnam are dominated by oil products, machinery and weapons. Among the latter are fighter planes and six Kilo-class, cruise missile-equipped submarines, the first of which is due to be delivered to the Vietnamese navy early next year under a $2 billion deal signed in 2009. Two more of the Kilo-Class submarines will be delivered in 2014, Vietnamese state media has reported.

After one week on trial, a private mini-submarine made by a Vietnamese mechanic can now work perfectly with its full functions. Nguyen Quoc Hoa, the one who performed the mini-submarine production, said on Local Lao Dong (Labor) online newspaper Thursday that machinery parts inside the mini-submarine operates well as originally designed.

"Successful tests have been carried out with internal engines of the mini-vessel, including generator system, oxygen supply system, air filter and radar system," said Hoa.
Specifically, the submarine managed to apply the advanced Air Independent Propulsion technology while diving, Hoa added.

Hoa, a director of an engineering company in Vietnam's northern Thai Binh province, some 110 km southeast from capital Hanoi, started to produce a mini-submarine in early 2013.
According to Hoa's design, the submarine has a 12-ton displacement, and is able to operate at a maximum depth of 50 meters and at a range of 800 km for 15 hours.
The testing mini-submarine is designed to work at estuaries or shallow water level for civilian purposes of marine natural resources research, and environmental protection, said Hoa.

Vietnam accepts the second 636 SSK submarine - Ho Chi Minh and officially commissions the first one - "Hà Nôi"

On the morning of January 15, 2014 in the Vietnamese naval base in Cam Ranh Bay , took place the commissioning ceremony of the Vietnamese Navy large diesel - electric submarine (SSK) HQ-182 "Hà Nôi" (Project 636 Kilo/Varshavyanka class). It is the first unit of six SSK built in Russia by JSC "Admiralty Shipyards" under a 2009 contract. In a ceremony attended by Navy Commander of the Vietnam People's Navy (VNA), Vietnam Deputy Defence Minister Admiral Nguyen Van Hien and Deputy Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral VNA Pham Ngoc Minh.

The first unit, HQ-182 "Hà Nôi", keel was laid at JSC "Admiralty Shipyards" in St. Petersburg on August 24, 2010, launched on 28 August 2012 and set sail for sea trials in December 2012. The submarine was transfered to the Vietnamese Navy on November 7, 2013. On November 15 the SSK was loaded in St. Petersburg on the Dutch cargo ship Rolldock Sea for delivery to Vietnam. Rolldock Sea arrived in the Vietnamese naval base at Cam Ranh on December 31, 2013.
On January 16, 2014 at "Admiralty Shipyards" in St. Petersburg took place the signing of technical acceptance between Vietnamese Navy and the shipyard for the second submaine HQ-183 "Ho Chi Minh". "Ho Chi Minh" was laid on September 28, 2011 , launched on 28 December 2012 and started builder's sea trials in the summer of 2013.

It is reported that on January 19 submarine Ho Chi Minh sailed from St. Petersburg to Kaliningrad to be loaded onto a transport vessel for subsequent delivery to Vietnam. It is expected to arrive in Vietnam in early March 2014.

According to Rosoboronexport, Project 636 proved highly effective while operated by naval forces of several countries.

Unparalleled in her technical and operational specifications, the ship is designed to conduct effective anti-sub warfare along with the capability to engage surface ships and coastal targets of potential adversary striking operations both independently or as part of a larger task force. Increased output of the main propulsion plant allowed to enhance significantly her submerged speed alongside with endurance range up to 7500 miles. Furthermore, she is one of the world’s quietest diesel-electric submarines providing guaranteed early enemy detection and long-range attack as well as evasive maneuverability and concealment.

Outstanding fighting efficiency of the project 636 submarine is supported by the Club-S missile system, intended for engaging all types of surface, submerged and coastal targets with unrivalled 3M-54E cruise missiles in the background of active electronic and firing counter effort. Capable of striking targets 275 km away, the system considerably strengthens combat stability of the DE submarine when facing enemy countermeasures. Wide use of the Club-S cruise missile system may result in drastic change of the entire sea battle nature in favor of the owner.

Vietnam tests 1st Russian-made submarine in Cam Ranh

The first of six Varshavyanka-class submarines bought from Russia carried out its first operational tests in Vietnamese waters Wednesday.All of HQ182 Hanoi's engines were tested for the first time and the vessel returned to Cam Ranh military port the same day, a source said.It had been towed by two Vietnamese Navy tugboats from Dutch heavy-lift ship Rolldock Sea and into the port last Friday.It is expected to finish tests by this Friday.

An official handover ceremony will be held on January 15 instead of Friday as earlier planned.The Rolldock Sea had brought it on a 27,000-km journey from St. Petersburg that took more than six and a half weeks. HQ182 Hanoi was launched in August 2012 and several trial runs were performed at sea in Russia.

It is one of the six diesel-electric submarines – considered improvements over the older Kilo-class vessels – that Vietnam agreed to buy from Russia under a US$2-billion deal signed during a visit by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung to that country in 2009.Russia will deliver all of them by 2016, train Vietnam crews, and supply Vietnam with necessary spare parts.

The submarines are being built by the St. Petersburg-based Admiralty Shipyards.They are nicknamed “black holes” for their ability to remain undetected underwater, and are designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship missions in relatively shallow waters, general reconnaissance, and patrols.They are equipped with six 533-millimeter torpedo tubes and 3M54 (or 3M-54 Klub) cruise missiles. They weigh 3,100 tons, can reach speeds of 20 knots (37 kilometers per hour), dive to 300 meters, and hold 52 crew members.

They make little noise and can hit long-distance targets. RIA Novosti cited sources from the Admiralty Shipyards and Russian defense officials as saying that the second and third submarines, HQ183 Ho Chi Minh City and HQ184 Hai Phong, are scheduled to be delivered later this year.The Vietnam Navy established its first modern submarine unit last June.

Military experts admit Cam Ranh’s position of great influence to the global geo-strategic map. In 1888 a Russian naval ship named "Knight" anchored at the Cam Ranh Port during its around-the-world journey. Since then, Cam Ranh became the military port where big countries stationed in the past 100 years. During the Russia - Japan War in 1905, more than 100 vessels of the Pacific Fleet N0. 2 of the Russian Navy gathered in Cam Ranh.

In 1935, the French began to build a naval base at Cam Ranh. In 1940, Cam Ranh fell into the Japanese’s hands, becoming a springboard for Japan to invade Malaysia and the colonial islands of the Dutch (Indonesia at present).

On October 18, 1946, President Ho Chi Minh and the French High Commissioner D' Argenlieu met in Cam Ranh. The meeting was held on the Suffren battleship, with the presence of French generals and foreign journalists.From 1965 to 1972, the U.S. built Cam Ranh Bay into a giant military base that was considered "sacrosanct" as the entrenched fortification to supply fuel and weapons for the war and to control the Pacific western corridor.

In 1969, Lyndon B. Johnson came to inspect the base and it was the first visit by a U.S. president to Vietnam. At that time, the U.S. air base at Cam Ranh Bay was very large, including two airports for jets and an airport for helicopters, each airport could host more than 100 aircrafts at the same time. The U.S. also bored the Cam Ranh mountain to build an aircraft storage and upgraded the runway to serve B52 bombers. The Cam Ranh military airport used to be the airport with the highest landing and take-off frequency in the world.In 1972, the Americans handed over the base to the Saigon regime and three years later, the Vietnam People's Army liberated Cam Ranh. At the time of takeover, Cam Ranh was completely destroyed.

Its warships, submarines and naval aircraft were deployed on the ocean for the purpose of stabilizing the world.The expansion of the scale and the the activities of vessels and the air force at sea required a wide naval logistics network. Since it did not have overseas military bases, the Soviet Union built technical and material supply stations in the territory of the countries which had friendly relations with it and Cam Ranh was a bright spot.

In late 1978, a group of Russian naval generals flew to Vietnam for the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the construction of such a station in Cam Ranh on December 30.
On May 2, 1979, the governments of the Soviet Union and Vietnam signed an agreement on the use of Cam Ranh as the station providing technical and material inputs for the Pacific Fleet of the Soviet army over 25 years.

Under the terms of the Agreement, from 8 to 10 Soviet warships, 4-8 submarines and up to 6 escort vessels can simultaneously anchor at the Cam Ranh military port.
At the same time the Cam Ranh military airport could accommodate from 14-16 missile aircraft, 6-9 surveillance planes and 2-3 transport aircraft. Depending on the specific situation, the numbers of aircraft and ships could be increased by agreement between the two Defense Ministries.
In May 1979, Soviet warships began entering into the waters of Cam Ranh. The next summer the K - 45 torpedo nuclear submarine was anchored at Cam Ranh. A short time later, naval aircraft of the Pacific fleet began landing here.

In December 1979, the Soviet Navy commander, Admiral X. Gorskop went to Cam Ranh and he spent a day observing the bay, just like the way US President Johnson did 10 years ago.
The first detachment of the Pacific Fleet consisting of 54 people came here in April 1980 and in August of that year the number increased to 78.Cam Ranh became the largest naval base of the Soviet Union abroad, the only base in the East Sea, which is 2,500 nautical miles from the closest port of Russia.



From the autumn 1983 to August 1991, the mobile squadron 17 deployed at Cam Ranh, from August 1991 to December 1991 it was replaced by the mobile squadron 8 and then the squadron 119.In February 1984, according to the proposal of Vietnam, the Soviet government decided to restore and to build a series of works in Cam Ranh base. The construction at Cam Ranh entered a new phase, when temporary structures were replaced by solid works.On the basis of the Agreement signed between the Soviet Union and Vietnam dated 20/4/1984, the two sides signed a contract to build a complex of radar stations in the form of non-refundable aid. From 1984 to 1987, Russia built a total of 28 housing and specialized works in Cam Ranh. At that time up to 6,000 Russian, including workers, lived in the base.

As agreed in Section 71 of the Agreement signed on 20/4/1984, these construction works would be handed over to Vietnam. The first works were completed in December 1987 and used by the Soviet experts in the form of free rent.

When leaving Cam Ranh, the Russians transported 588 people, 819 tons of cargo, including 50 special vehicles, 190 tons of diesel oil, 133 tons of oil of all types, weapons and ammunition, as well as documents, by both air and sea. At the same time, the Russians handed over to Vietnam 57 buildings and construction works, 85km power transmission line, 62km power cables, 25km of underground works, 250m wharves, airports and warehouse systems.
UX Ivanovich, a Russian veteran in Cam Ranh, recalled that until 1992, when the Soviet Union disintegrated, the entrance-exit procedures at Cam Ranh were managed by Vietnam.
The Cam Ranh naval base today is considered one of the largest bases of Vietnam Navy. It is also selected as the base of the Hanoi Kilo submarine and maybe other submarines. The Cam Ranh military port is increasingly proving its strategic importance.

Vietnam Navy selects MBDA Exocet and VL Mica missiles for its Sigma 9814 Corvettes





Vietnam has selected MBDA's Exocet MM40 Block III anti-ship missiles and VL Mica SAM systems for its two Damen built Sigma 9814 Corvettes according to French business weekly La Tribune. The two systems represent some of the most modern maritime superiority missile solutions.
